A Case of Occupational Asthma in a Metal Arc Welder

Abstract
|

|
experienced a case of occupational asthmatic patient employed in metal are welding process.
The patient nad been a 35-year-old male electric welder in a ship-repairing factory since 11 years ago, He had begun to feel cough and dyspnea after welding with DIN 8556 (stainless steel) electrode since 2 months ago.
On physical examination, expiratory wheezing on both rung field audible. Chest X-ray showed no specific abnormality. Total IgE level by PRIST was 1203 IU/ml. Methacholine PC20 level was 0.9mg/ml. The bronchoprovocation test of metal arc
(electric)
welding process using DIN 8556 electrode showed a dual asthmatic response. An apprecible amounts of nickel (7~10%) and chromium (17~20%) and chromium (17~20%) were noted within DIN 8556 electrode.
